EUREKA
Tawny spotted male
RED COLLAR |
Susanne & Luis R, Melbourne, Vic |
The
rebellion at the Eureka Stockade in Victoria on December 3, 1854
was prompted by grievances over heavily priced mining items without
representation and the harsh and unfair actions of the government and
its agents (the police and military). The events which sparked the
rebellion were initially specific to the Ballarat gold fields, however,
the miners' demands included the right to vote and purchase land as well
as the reduction of Mining License fees. Although swiftly and
violently put down, the Eureka rebellion was a watershed event in
Australian politics. The years of agitation, the rebellion and the
mass public support in Melbourne for the captured 'rebels' when placed
on trial, resulted in men's voting rights in elections for the lower
house in the Victorian parliament (Australian women had to wait until
1902 for their right to vote!). The role of the Eureka Stockade in
generating public support for these demands beyond the goldfields
resulted in Eureka being controversially identified with the birth of
democracy in Australia |
