Lismore
- a small town, 170 km west of Melbourne in Victoria. It lies a
few kilometres from the Colac lakes system. The lakes spread
across a huge sweep of volcanic plains. The largest lake, Lake

fish, which has extreme tolerance to salt, can survive its waters.
The town and surrounds produces wool products including "Ugg boots". |

Van
Diemen's Land - this was the original name used by Europeans for the
island of Tasmania, now part of Australia. The Dutch explorer,
Abel Tasman, was the first European to explore Tasmania. In 1803,
the island was colonised by the British as a convict settlement.
In 1824, VDL became a colony in its own right. In 1856, the colony
was given the right to self-govern with a representative in the
Australian parliament and the name VDL was changed to the current
'Tasmania'. |
