bulleta small town, 170 km west of Melbourne in Victoria.  It lies a few kilometres from the Colac lakes system.  The lakes spread across a huge sweep of volcanic plains.  The largest lake, Lake Corangamite, is 3 times saltier than the ocean and only one type of fish, which has extreme tolerance to salt, can survive its waters.  The town and surrounds produces wool products including "Ugg boots".

bulletJames Cook -  1728-1779 was an English explorer, navigator and cartographer with the Royal Navy.  He made three voyages to the Pacific Ocean during which he made the first European contact with the east coast of Australia and the Hawaiian islands.  He also made the first recorded circumnavigation of New Zealand.

bulletAdmiral Arthur Phillip - 1738-1814 set sail with The First Fleet, a collection of 11 ships bound for Australia, from England in May 1787.  On January 26, 1788, Phillip landed his marines and convicts at Sydney Cove, the site of which is now the city of Sydney.  Phillip was the first appointed Governor of New South Wales, the first European colony on the Australian continent.  He worked tirelessly to establish a viable settlement - in 1792, due to ill health, he returned to England.

bullet

Van Diemen's Land - this was the original name used by Europeans for the island of Tasmania, now part of Australia.  The Dutch explorer, Abel Tasman, was the first European to explore Tasmania.  In 1803, the island was colonised by the British as a convict settlement.  In 1824, VDL became a colony in its own right.  In 1856, the colony was given the right to self-govern with a representative in the Australian parliament  and the name VDL was changed to the current 'Tasmania'.
