The Snowy Mountains are the highest Australian
mountain range wherein lies Australia's highest mountain, Mount Kosciusko, 2,228 metres above sea level. The Snowies are in New
South Wales and are part of the larger Australian Alps and Great
Dividing Range. The mountain range is thought to have had
Aboriginal occupation for more than 20,000 years. It was first

 | Ozspots Dampier - Chocolate spotted silver male (Gen 3) - Christine W, Woodend, Victoria
 |
William Dampier, born about 1651, was an English sea captain, author
and scientific observer. Early in 1688, his ship Cygnet was
beached on the northwest coast of Australia near King Sound for
repairs. Whilst waiting for repairs to be completed, he made
notes on the fauna and flora he found there. In
1699, he was given command of the ship HMS Roebuck and commissioned to
explore Australia and New Guinea. On July 26, 1699 he reached
Dirk Hartog Island at the mouth of Shark Bay in Western
Australia. He
was the first Englishman to explore or map parts of New Holland (as
Australia was first known). The town of Dampier and the Dampier Archipelago
are named after William Dampier. Dampier is situated
on King Bay which is 1,558 km from Perth on Western Australia's coral
coast. The Dampier Archipelago consists of 42 islands within 45
km radius of Dampier, popular for fishing and diving on the coral reef
and exploration of the many shipwrecks that lie there.

Sydney Cove was poor, Governor Phillip in 1789 granted a convict named
James Ruse land to set up the Experiment Farm at Parramatta on the
condition that he develop a viable agriculture. There Ruse became the
first person to successfully grow grain in Australia and virtually saved
the fledgling settlement from starvation. |

|
 | Ozspots Cooper - Chocolate spotted silver male - Neil McW,
Darlinghurst, NSW
 | Cooper's Creek rises west of The Great Dividing Range in Queensland,
then spreads out into a vast area of meandering channels, making its way roughly
south into the far south-west corner of Queensland before turning due west into
South Australia towards Lake Eyre. In most years, it is
absorbed into the earth, goes to fill channels and the many permanent
waterholes, or simply evaporates without reaching Lake Eyre. In very wet years,
however, it manages to flood the entire Channel Country and reaches the
lake. In 1860-61, Robert O'Hara Burke and William John Wills led an
expedition of 18 men with the intention of crossing Australia
from south to north, a distance of around 2,800 kilometres (1,750 miles).
At that time most of the inland of Australia had not been explored by
non-indigenous people and was completely unknown to the European settlers.
The famous 'DIG tree' was located on the banks of the Bullah
Bullah Waterhole on Coopers Creek in south-west Queensland where Burke and Wills
died in 1861. |
