 | Ozspots Ned Kelly - Chocolate spotted silver male - Sarah H, Brighton,
Victoria
 | Australia's
most famous bushranger, Ned Kelly was born in Australia in 1854 of Irish
immigrant parents. Whether he was just 'born bad' or was forced
into a life of crime because of police pressure is a matter of
debate. Ned engaged in horse-stealing, murder and even held the
town of Jerilderie at ransom for 3 days. Ned was eventually shot
and arrested at the famous siege at Glenrowan. At Ned's trial in
Melbourne in 1880, Mr. Justice Barry, in sentencing Ned to death by
hanging said - 'May the Lord have mercy on your soul' to which Ned
replied 'Yes, I'll meet you there." Ned was hanged at the
Melbourne jail on November 11, 1880. Mr. Justice Redmond Barry
died shortly afterwards. |

 | Frank

years of his 32 year sentence, he was released in 1874 on condition that
he leave the country. He immediately left Australia for California
where he opened a saloon in San Francisco under the name 'Frank
Smith'. He died there in 1883. |
|
 | Ozspots Kitty Brown - Chocolate spotted female - Sarah H, Brighton,
Victoria
 | Kitty
Brown was the long-time mistress of Frank Gardiner. She
inadvertently brought the law to their door when she wrote home to her
parents telling them of her happy new life with Frank operating a
roadside store at Apis Creek on the road from Rockhampton to Peak Downs
diggings in Queensland. As there was a warrant for Frank's arrest,
it didn't take long for the police to track them down and arrest
Frank. He was brought to trial and sentenced to 32 years
imprisonment. Kitty went to New Zealand to wait for Frank, but
died before he was released. |
|
 | Ozspots Anne Jones - Tawny spotted female - Virginia W, Cobden, Victoria
 | Anne
Jones' claim to Australian fame is that she was the proprietor of the
famous Glenrowan Inn which was situated on Sydney Road about
half-way between Winton and Wangaratta. The Inn was built
following the discovery of gold at the Ovens River. Just prior to
the final siege of the Kelly Gang, the gang took 62 people hostage from
Glenrowan township and herded them into the Glenrowan Inn. At the
end of the siege, all that remained of the Inn was burnt rubble, in
which were found the bodies of Dan Kelly and Steve Hart, two of the
Kelly gang. Ned Kelly was captured and taken to Melbourne for
trial. |

 | Ozspots Dubbo - Tawny spotted male - Jenni McK, Brisbane, Q'land
 | A city in the Central West Region of NSW, Australia
with a population of more than 30,500. Evidence of habitation by
aboriginal Australians dates back approximately 40,000 years. John
Oxley was the first European to report on the area now known as Dubbo in
1818. The first permanent settler in the area was Robert Dulhunty, described as one of the
wealthiest citizens in the Australian colony at the time. Dulhunty
occupied a property, known as Dubbo station, from the early 1830s on a
squatting basis, then after 1836, with the passing of the Squatting Act in
1836 he took out a licence on the property. Dulhunty showed an
affinity with the local natives - his party included some 40 Aborigines
and he favoured using Aboriginal names for properties, including Dubbo.
Dubbo is now thought to be a mispronunciation of the local Wiradjuri word
"Thubbo". |
