is a suburb of Sydney, in the state of NSW, Australia, located 3 km
north of Sydney central. Kirribilli House is located on the
north shore of Sydney Harbour in the suburb of Kirribilli.
The house was built about 1854 and after passing through many private
hands, was resumed by the then Prime Minister, Billy Hughes in 1920 for
use by staff of the Governor-General. In 1956 Kirribilli House was
set aside as a residence for the official use of Prime Ministers, when
they needed to perform official duties and extend official hospitality
when in Sydney. The official Prime Ministerial residence is The Lodge,
Canberra. Kirribilli House was most prominent recently during
the Prime Ministership of John Howard (1996-2007), who departed with

Jenolan Caves are in the Blue Mountains, NSW, Australia, 175 km
west of Sydney. They are the most celebrated of several similar
groups in the limestone of the country being the oldest discovered open
caves in the world. They include numerous marine fossils of great interest
and the calcite formations, sometimes pure white, are of extraordinary
beauty. The caves were known to the local Aboriginal population for many
thousands of years as Binoomea, "Dark places". According to
legend, the first
European to see the caves was James McKeown, an ex-convict and possibly an
outlaw, reputed to have been using the caves as a hideout. The
Aboriginal word "Jenolan" means "high mountain"
and was adopted in 1884. |
