Ozspots Southern Star - Chocolate spotted silver female - Skye A, Bendigo, Vic
 |
The Southern Cross
is
the best known and most represented star group in the Southern
Hemisphere. The group's
distinctive shape is easily located because of its brightness and close
proximity to each other. It can be seen all year round from almost
anywhere in the Australia. The stars of the Southern Cross form
part of our Australian flag. |

Ozspots Dreamtime - Chocolate spotted silver female - Andrea M, Croydon, Vic
 |
In Australian aboriginal
mythology, the time during which the earth was formed and
living things were created is known as 'The Dreamtime'. It consists of four
aspects: The beginning of all things; the life and influence of
the ancestors; the way of life and
death; and sources of power in life. It consists of all
four aspects at the same time because it is a condition beyond time
and space where all things exist at once. |

Ozspots Bennelong - Tawny spotted male - Anne, Cory & Troy W, Woollongong, NSW
 |
Bennelong was an elder (senior man) of
the Eora tribe of Australian aboriginal people found in area in which
Sydney was first settlement in 1788. He is thought to have been
born about 1764.
He was captured in
November 1789 as part of Governor Phillip's plan to learn the language
and customs of the local people. Although a captive, Bennelong
served the British colonisers well in an (ultimately vain) attempt to
aid relations between the two groups. In 1790, Bennelong asked
the Governor to build him a hut on what became known as Bennelong
Point, now the site of the Sydney Opera House. |

 |
Ozspots Sundowner - Black spotted silver female - Anne, Woollongong, NSW
 |
An Australian term for a tramp or
drifter or
vagabond who habitually arrives at sundown.
|
|
 |
Ozspots Australis - Chocolate spotted silver male - Annie D, Burwood, Vic
 |
A Latin adjective for 'southern'. 'Terra Australis' is Latin for "the unknown land of the South") and was an
imaginary continent, appearing on European maps from the15th to the
18th century. The
idea of 'Terra Australis' was finally corrected by Matthew Flinders and
James Cook. Cook circumnavigated New Zealand, showing it could
not be part of this large imaginary continent. Then, Flinders
then took command of an expedition to investigate the coastline of
Australia in 1801. |
