Kittens' Names
KATANDRA
-
A town in Victoria, Australia, it
is regarded
as the 'fruit bowl' of
the Goulburn Valley. It takes its name from an original station
(a very large pastural property) on the vastTallyaroopna run, which was
divided into two properties in 1848. The area was originally
developed as a soldier settlement for Diggers who served in World War
II.
ADELONG
-
A town time passed by - Adelong
is about 420
south west of Sydney in
the Snowy Mountains of New South Wales, Australia. It has a
population of about 900 people. The name 'Adelong' was taken from
the Aboroginal language and means 'along the way'. Many European
explorers passed through Adelong in its early history, but it wasn't
until gold was discovered in the area in 1857 that the town came
alive. Over 25 tonnes of gold was mined between 1857 and
1914. It is now a unique heritage-listed township.
CATANI - is a settlement in South Gippsland, Victoria,
Australia with a
population (including surrounding districts) of about 2,000
people. Catani once boasted a railway station on the Strezylecki
line into Gippsland, but this has now closed.
GOONDAWINDI
-
A town situated on the Queensland/New South
Wales border close to the
Macintyre River. It is the commercial hub of a vast agricultural
and pastoral sector which produces cotton, grain, wool, beef, lamb and
pork for domestic and overseas markets. Goondawindi was also home
to the famous "Goondawindi Grey", Gunsynd, a beautiful grey Australian
racehorse. He was a great favourite with the crowds because of
his tremendous will to win. From 54 starts, he had 29 wins, 7
seconds and 8 thirds, and is arguably the best grey galloper in
Australian history.
GERALDTON
-
A city and port in Western Australia, about
424 km north of Perth,
population 30,000. It is important for mining, fishing, wheat,
sheep and tourism. Although many European maritime explorers were
wrecked on the rocky costs near Geraldton, the first recorded European
to explore the area was George Grey in 1839. The town derives its
name from the Geraldine lead mine, named after the then Governor
Charles Fitzgerald.
KATAMATITE -
A small rural township of about 300
people
located 230 km north of
Melbourne in Victoria, Australia. Canoe trees, old cooking sites
and the discovery of stone implements stand as testimony to the
occupation of this area by Aborigines prior to white settlement.
The town's name is thought to derive from the Aboriginal word 'Catamateet' for local creek. The first white man to visit the
area was Edward Knull who took up the Tallygaroopna run in 1841.
It was on this land that Katamatite would later develop.
