OZSPOTS BENDIGO

Tawny spotted male

Dark Blue collar

SOLD - Caryn E, Rozelle, NSW Bendigo, Victoria's second largest inland city, lies about 131 km north of Melbourne.  The area was originally known as 'Bendigo's Valley' and became a major provincial centre as a result of the Victorian gold rush in the 1850's. The name "Bendigo" derives from an employee of the Mount Alexander Run, an ex-sailor or bullock driver who was handy with his fists and nicknamed and fought under the name "Bendigo Thompson”.

OZSPOTS STRATHBOGIE

Tawny spotted male

Pale Blue collar

SOLD - Benjamin P, Hillcrest, NSW Strathbogie is a town in Victoria, Australia with a population in 2001 of just 256 people.  It was first settled by European squatters from about 1842 on large tracts of rugged land throughout the Strathbogie Ranges where they ran thousands of sheep and hundreds of cattle.

OZSPOTS CAPTAIN STARLIGHT

Chocolate spotted male

No collar

SOLD - Caryn E, Rozelle, NSW Henry Arthur "Harry" Redford (1841-1901) was a well known Australian cattle thief, known as Captain Starlight, "the gentleman bushranger".  In 1870 (just 10 years after the Burke & Wills expedition) Redford, was working as a stockman on the huge Bowen Downs Station in Queensland where remote parts of the property were seldom visited by station workers. With help, he built stockyards in an outlying part of the property, gradually assembled a herd of about 1000 prime cattle, which he then stole.  Knowing the cattle would be recognised as stolen if sold in Queensland, he headed for South Australia through the Channel Country and the Strzelecki Desert - a truly remarkable droving achievement.  He sold a white bull at Artracoona Native Well near Hill Hill Station, and the remainder of the mob at Blanchewater Station, east of Maree.  Workers at Bowen Downs eventually discovered the loss of the cattle and a party of stockmen and trackers took off in pursuit, many weeks behind Redford.  They eventually reached Artracoona, and found the white bull.  They caught up with Redford in Sydney in 1872.  He was tried in Roma, Queensland. But the jury were so impressed by his achievements that they found him not guilty, whereupon the Government shut down the Roma District Court for eight months!  Redford became something of a national hero, and the character Captain Starlight in Rolf Boldrewood's book 'Robbery Under Arms' was based in part on his exploits. Redford died while trying to swim across a flooded creek in the Northern Territory in about 1901.

OZSPOTS HAWTHORN

Chocolate spotted female

Pink collar

SOLD - Tanya & Fraser H, Burnside, Q'land

Hawthorn is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, situated 6 km east of Melbourne.  The area was settled in the 1830's and the name Hawthorn, gazetted in 1840 as "Hawthorne", is thought to have originated from a conversation involving Charles La Trobe (the first lieutenant-governor of Victoria), who commented that the native shrubs looked like flowering Hawthorn bushes.

OZSPOTS RBT O'HARA BURKE

Tawny spotted male

Green collar

SOLD - Paul & Nellie C, Brunswick, Vic Robert O'Hara Burke, born about 1820 in Ireland, came to Australia where he worked as a police officer.  He was the leader of the ill-fated 'Burke & Wills Expedition'  of 1861 - the first expedition to cross Australia from south to north, finding a route across the continent from the settled areas of Victoria to the Gulf of Carpentaria.  The expedition party was well-equipped, but Burke was not experienced in bushcraft and his leadership is often blamed for the failure of the project and deaths of seven people in the party, including himself.

OZSPOTS NORFOLK

Tawny spotted female

Red collar

SOLD - Jane H, Mordialloc, Vic

Norfolk Island is a small island in the Pacific Ocean located between Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonia.  It and two neighbouring islands form one of Australia's external territories.  It was first sighted by Captain James Cook in about 1744.  It is famous for its beautiful tall, straight Norfolk Pines as well as its terrible penal colony history, begun in about 1787 and ended in about 1855.

OZSPOTS JILLAROO

Tawny spotted female

Mauve collar

SOLD - Linda & Geoff T, Darwin, NT

In Australia, stockman is the traditional name given to a person who looks after the livestock on a large property known as a station.  Station employees, including stockmen, who work at a number of different occupations within their work, are also known as “station hands”. Male trainee station managers are known as "jackaroos" and their female equivalent as "'Jillaroos"..
