NAMES
|
JARDINE
- named after the Jardine River, which
is in a national park in
Queensland, Australia. It is located 2,137 km from Brisbane,
capital of Queensland and 900 km NW of Cairns and is situated on the
tip of the Cape York Peninsula, the northernmost point of Australia.
ALICE - or Alice Springs is a town and the second
largest
centre in the Northern Territory of Australia. Known as 'The
Alice' it has a population of more than 26,000. Alice Springs is
the town in the title of the Nevile Shute novel, 'A Town Like Alice'.
GUNDAGAI - is a
town in
NSW, Australia, located along the Murrumbidgee River.
Australian-born explorer Hamilton Hume and British immigrant William
Hovell were the first European explorers to visit what is now Gundagai
when they passed through in 1824. Charles Sturt also travelled
through the area in 1829 at the start of his voyage in search of an
inland sea believed at that time to exist in outback Australia.
The town is referenced in many stories, songs and poems, including
'Where the Dog Sits on the Tuckerbox (five miles from Gundagai).
BARWON - there are Barwon Rivers in Queensland, New
South
Wales, and Victoria. The Victorian river rises in the Otweay
Ranges, runs through Winchelsea and the city of Geelong where it is
joined by the Moorabool River and enters the sea at Barwon Heads after
passing through Lake Connewarre.
MULLUMBIMBY - a
town
(population 3,000) in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales,
Australia. It lies at the foot of Mount Chincogan in the
Brunswick Valley. It was first settled by European settlers in
about 1850.
MYRTLEFORD - a
town
situated in the heart of the Ovens Valley in NE Victoria, Audtralia,
located at the junction of the Ovens and Buffalo Rivers.
JEDDA - the
name of a
film shot in 1955 by Australian filmmaker Charles Chauvel. One of
the main characters in the film was an Aboriginal girl named
Jedda. The film starred two Aboriginal actors, Robert Tudawali
and Ngarla Kumoth in the leading roles and the film has been regarded
as having great influence in early Australian cinema. |
